Safety system as security mitigation
I am not aware of this being done but it is a viable solution. Although this ought to be reserved I think for the final mitigation vs not doing as much as possible [economically] with other mitigations first. In a legacy system it might be the only way to mitigate a serious issue from a security problem. I think it would be tough to justify that a "crash" shutdown is a primary mitigation solution in a typical plant's security mitigation plan.
Using safety systems to mitigate documentationr requirements
I don't know of anybody, right now. If somebody is, please chime in. I think this is a very interesting idea. One of the problems I see with traditional safety systems is that they are so independent that the information that is in them is siloed-- and it isn't good strategic control system design to silo information at any time.
