A small banner on the right of a wide screen display could indicate the range, alarm limits, level indicator etc, instead of a pop-up on the displays. This way, the operator has the entire display area to view the process. Double click on a item could allow the user to pop-up the faceplate, if required.

Definitely not a bad idea. My current project is using the right side of the widescreen as a "parking lot" for faceplates so that they always come up there and do not cover the graphic.

The single-click/double-click concept I don't like as much, though. In my experience, operators may start double-clicking everything, which is not what you want them doing on faceplates.
