How Many Colors is it Suitable for an Operator Picture?

Some control engineers asked for full colorful, even 3D-style operator pictures for their Operator Consoles. Yes, I know they look beautiful. But considering for the alarm management I am wondering if this kind of pictures are really good for operator control? Is there any standard or guideline I can follow? Any suggestion will be appreciated.

I think we're trending towards simplicity

That's good question, I wonder that myself too. While I don't know of any guidelines or standards out there, I have noticed that the operator screens shown by the DeltaV System group has been moving towards more minimalistic design.
