Increasing use of handheld devices for field troubleshooting

I was reading some research verbatim quotes about the increasing use of handheld devices to improve the operator inside control room / operator or maintenance tech outside in field troubleshooting situations.

Are you seeing this same increase in usage and if so, what are some things missing in the handheld tools currently used?
